J W Young was one of the early manufacturers of fishing reels and produced both centrepin and fixed spool reels.
Many of these reels are still in use today, but it is the J W Young centrepin reels that are most popular, with Garcia Mitchell fixed spool reels beating those by J W Young for popularity.
A number of J W Young fly fishing reels were also produced, and these are also popular with collectors and anglers who prefer to fish with vintage fishing tackle.
J W Young centrepin reels were robustly manufactured, and are chunkier and heavier than other fixed spool reels of the period. Models include the Ambidex, available in several models, and so named because the handle could be unscrewed and fitted to either side of the reel allowing for use by either right handed or left handed anglers.
Models of J W Young centrepin reels include the Rapidex, Trudex and Pridex. Probably the most well known model for fly fishing is the Condex, other models include the Beaudex and Ousel.
It is also possible to find reels made by J W Young for sale by other companies, including Milwards, Ogden Smith, Shakespeare and Army & Navy stores.
